Faces & Places

Faces & Places Background

This section is an initiative by Mayor Rohde and others to highlight the smaller businesses in our town that capture and represent the personality and makeup of our community. The businesses listed below have operated in Meriden for ten or more years and while not always getting the recognition they deserve, they continue to serve the needs of their customers and our citizens. Having weathered the winds of economic change, they have committed their lives to this City and are a major reason why Meriden is what it is today. Special thanks to John DiRoma for volunteering his time to providing the pictures of the buildings, owners and their staff.

Gionfriddo Fine Men's Clothing / Gionfriddo International

Gionfriddo Fine Men's Clothing / Gionfriddo International

Gionfriddo's Fine Men's clothing was established in 1985 by Joseph Gionfriddo Sr. Joseph learned the art of tailoring in Italy and upon his arrival in the USA in 1955, brought his talents to several men's clothing stores; P&Q Clothing in New Britain and then Harry Israel's in Meriden. In 1969 Joseph Sr. started a women's clothing factory on Springdale Avenue in Meriden and in 1975, operated a second women's clothing factory on Franklin Avenue in Hartford.

Upon closing the manufacturing factories in 1985, Joe decided to utilize his tailoring expertise in his own clothing store where he offers a wide variety of services including a full line of custom tailored men's clothing, suits, sportcoats, overcoats and made to measure shirts. Also available is a full line of quality men's ready to wear clothing and a wide assortment of men's accessories. Expert professional alterations for men and women and tuxedo rentals are offered to complete the array of services available.

In 1992, Joseph Jr. expanded the facilities with the Gionfriddo International Wholesale branch of services importing "Made in Italy" quality men's clothing, sweaters, casual knit shirts, leisure wear and jeans. He was an invited guest of the Italian Trade Commission in 2009 at their trade exposition in Milan as recognition for furthering the "Made in Italy" clothing standard. In addition, he received and accepted a similar invitation from the Peruvian Trade Commission to visit their exposition in Lima early in 2010 and is adding some of their products to the clothing base he furnishes to upwards of 700 quality men's clothing stores across the U.S.

Joseph Jr. presents his wholesale line to buyers at clothing shows in New York City, Las Vegas and Florida several times a year, and now has sales reps covering most areas of the country.

The Little Rendezvous

The Little Rendezvous

Established in the late 1800s as a bakery, the Verdolini family in 1938 connected the two buildings with the hallway and this is when it became known as "The Little Rendezvous." From there the Mezzonetti family took over in 1946 and the Pascucci family ran it until 1962 when Lou Molinari took it over. Shortly thereafter, Paul Bernier started to work part-time until he eventually took over in the fall of 1980. After 16 years of working at UPS, Steve switched to full-time and decided to make this business his future career.

The Little Rendezvous serves only coal fired brick oven pizza, cold beer and soda. Coal was and still is the main source of heat for cooking the pizza pies. There is no delivery service and only cash is accepted for payment.
