School Health Services

The School Health Program provides comprehensive school health services to students enrolled in Meriden’s public and non-public schools.
The program serves students in the Early Intervention Program and Pre-K through Grade 12 in collaboration with state-wide community resources, providing a healthful and safe school environment.
The School Health Program staff is dedicated to the students and their families, and is a valuable resource for the community. School Health Services are provided by Registered Nurses licensed by the State of Connecticut.
School Health Services include state mandated screenings (i.e. vision, hearing, scoliosis); nursing assessments; emergency care and first aid; health education; special medical procedures (G-tube feeding, peak flow monitoring, diabetes care, etc.); health maintenance/health counseling; immunization; school and sports physical exams (middle and high school students); home visits; and physician and community resource referral.
Program Objectives:
- Assist normal growth and development by establishing desirable health habits and attitudes in students and their families.
- Evaluate the health of all students through assessment with follow-up of all findings.
- Interpret health needs of students and communicate these needs to parents and teachers
- Help the student and family to function efficiently within the school setting by providing a school health environment that meets the special needs of the student.
- Promote, improve and maintain student health through teaching and counseling
- Respond to medical emergencies and injuries through planning and preparing and the application of skill and knowledge.
