Housing Authority

The Housing Authority of the City of Meriden is under the leadership of Robert V. Cappelletti.

Connecticut Public Housing Authorities were created by the Connecticut Legislature in an effort to provide housing for low income persons. The Meriden Housing Authority is an autonomous body, established in 1943 and governed by a board of five commissioners.  A commissioner’s term is for a period of five years commencing on September 1st and expiring on August 31st.  Each year, the term of one commissioner expires and is filled by appointment of the City Manager, which does not require approval by the City Council.  The function of the Board of Commissioners is to formulate policy for the Housing Authority, which is then administered by the Executive Director.  The Executive Director, who is appointed by the Board of Commissioners, administers and directs the day to day operations of the Housing Authority.

All Housing Authorities in Connecticut operate under federal (HUD) regulations for federal developments, and both the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) and the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) for state developments.  Although the Housing Authority in Meriden operates under federal and state regulations, the MHA does work closely with the City Manager and other departments within the City of Meriden in a cooperative effort to resolve housing issues for low and moderate income persons.
